Sarah Newton

Sarah Newton is the Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth. She entered Parliament at the 2010 general election when the constituency was created.

Health Committee Nomination

In 2010, Sarah Newton was one of the MPs to nominate Nadine Dorries for the position of Chair of the Health Select Committee.[1]

Mitochondrial Donation

In February 2015 Sarah Newton voted in favour of allowing mitochondrial donation, which would allow women who carried mitochondrial diseases to have genetically related children who would not inherit the disease[2]. An October 2014 briefing report by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which had been investigating the issue for three years, stated that there was no evidence to show that mitochondrial donation was unsafe[3]. However, some religious groups had said that such procedures should not be allowed[4]. After clearing both Houses mitochondrial donation is now legal, regulated by the HFEA.

Same-Sex Marriage

Approx. January 2013: "I have been contacted by many of my constituents who have been keen to pass on their views about the issue of same sex couples and civil marriages. I do understand the strength of feeling over this issue and as a firm believer in representative democracy, I will be casting my vote on this issue according to the majority view of my constituents."[5]

Ms Newton subsequently voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill at its second reading in February 2013[6] and did not vote at its third reading in May 2013[7].

Bee Health
