The issue is that the database to map UK postcodes to physical locations is not available for public use. You have to pay a fee, even though it's created with public funds. This means it's impractical to provide a free service using postcodes.

Arguments for a free postcode database

Only big companies get to use this data created at the Tax payers expense. It should be included as part of the governments drive to create data.gov.uk, opening up government owned data. To create a barrier to use stifles innovation.

The government has an obligation to keep taxes low. The postcode database costs money to maintain and that is currently funded by the corporations licensing the data.
