Pat Doherty was the Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone from 2001 until he stepped down at the 2017 general election. He was also an MLA for the West Tyrone constituency in the Northern Ireland Assembly until July 2012 when he stepped down due to Sinn Féin's policy against "double jobbing".
Initially, in October 2010, Doherty signed Early Day Motions 707: Government Funding for UK Science, and 767: Science is Vital Campaign. Both motions supported investment in science in the face of cuts anticipated in the coalition government's October 2010 spending review. However, in January 2011, Doherty withdrew his signature from all three EDMs that he had signed in the 2010/2011 session, including EDMs 707 and 767.
