Elaine Murray is the Scottish Labour MSP for Dumfries. She is standing for re-election in the new constituency of Dumfriesshire in the 2011 Scottish general election. Murray entered the Scottish Parliament at its creation in 1999.
Murray has an Honours Degree in Chemistry from Edinburgh University, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Cambridge University. She has worked in scientific research, and was an associate lecturer for the Open University.
On 10th November 2010, Elaine Murray spoke in a Parliamentary debate on the topic of Science, held on the same day as a Science and Parliament event organised by groups including the Royal Society of Chemistry. In her speech Murray stated that she had been "associated with the event as a sponsor for several years", and mentioned the problems for science of university funding cuts.
