Chris Williamson was the Labour MP for Derby North from 2010 until he lost the seat at the 2015 general election.

Science Funding

In September 2010, Chris Williamson signed Early Day Motion 707: Government Funding for UK Science. The motion stated that the house "supports the view of the President of the Royal Society that short-term austerity risks undermining the UK's future science base", noted that other countries were investing in science to promote economic growth, and "believes that investment in basic scientific research throughout the UK is vital if the commercial benefits of developing new technology are to be broadly spread".[1]

General Election 2010 Skeptical Voter Questionnaire

These questions were sent to Chris Williamson on April 12, 2010 and answers were provided on April 20th.

1. Do you support the use of public funds to provide unproven alternative “treatments” such as homeopathy?

ANSWER: Yes.

2. Should schools be allowed to teach creationism as an equivalent theory to evolution?

ANSWER: No.

3. Do you believe that religious belief should be legally protected from ridicule?

ANSWER: Yes.

4. Should an independent government adviser whose views in their area of expertise conflict with government policy be able to express those views publicly without fear of being sacked?

ANSWER: No.

5. Should Sharia law be allowed as an alternative system within UK law?

ANSWER: No.

6. Do you agree that testing on animals (within strict criteria) is a necessary part of the development of medicines?

ANSWER: Scientific views are mixed on this issue

7. Should policy-makers trust scientific evidence even when it appears counter-intuitive?

ANSWER: Yes.

8. Do you think that abortion time limits should always be determined by the current scientific and medical consensus?

ANSWER. They should be taken into account

9. Should religious leaders be entitled to vote in the House of Lords?

ANSWER: No.

10. Do you support the reform of English and Welsh libel law to allow a stronger ‘public interest’ defence?

ANSWER: No.

Same-Sex Marriage

Chris Williamson voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill at both its second reading in February 2013[2] and its third reading in May 2013[3].
