Catherine McKinnell is the Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne North. She entered Parliament at the 2010 general election, the previous MP, Doug Henderson (Labour), having stood down.

Science Funding

In October 2010, Catherine McKinnell signed Early Day Motions 707: Government Funding for UK Science[1], and 767: Science is Vital Campaign[2]. Both motions supported investment in science in the face of cuts anticipated in the coalition government's forthcoming spending review.

Christian Action, Research and Education (CARE)

The CARE organisation, in addition to running an MP's intern scheme, has sponsored a "Gay Cure" event, and campaigned against equal rights for homosexuals

April 2012: Ms McKinnell "I am deeply concerned by these allegations and, due to the sensitivity of the issues involved, I have taken the decision to terminate my collaboration with CARE's internship programme with immediate effect, and I will not be taking an intern from the CARE Leadership Programme in the future."[3]

Same-Sex Marriage

Catherine McKinnell voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill at both its second reading in February 2013[4] and its third reading in May 2013[5].
