Andrew Smith was the Labour MP for Oxford East 1987 until he stepped down in 2017.

In May 2008 in the abortion amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill (now Act), Andrew Smith voted to keep the current time limit of 24 weeks in line with the scientific and medical consensus[1].

Libel Law Reform

In response to an inquiry from a constituent about his stance on libel law reform, Mr Smith wrote:

"I very much share your concern about the exploitation of the UK libel laws and the inhibiting impact this is having in medicine, science, journalism and literature.
"Some of the stories which have been reported in the press really do give huge grounds for concern.
"I shall be pleased to support this campaign for libel law reform, and have written to Justice Secretary Jack Straw in support of the points you make, I shall let you know when I receive a reply."[2]

As of 14th February 2010, he has not signed Early Day Motion 423[3]. However, the MP rarely signs EDMs, having signed only one since resigning from the Cabinet in 2004[4].

Same-Sex Marriage

Andrew Smith voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill at both its second reading in February 2013[5] and its third reading in May 2013[6].
