Alan Lawther was the 2010 Alliance Party Parliamentary candidate for South Antrim.

He studied Chemistry at Cambridge University[1].

Skeptical Voter Questionnaire Response

Thank you for allowing to give you my views on these important matters. My early career background is in science. I have a chemistry degree from Cambridge and have taught the subject and have worked in the pharmaceutical industry. I believe in free speech and a tolerant, secular society where diversity is celebrated and enjoyed.

[1. Do you support the use of NHS money to provide unproven health products such as homeopathy?]

Q1 no

[2. Should schools be allowed to teach creationism as an equivalent theory to evolution?]

Q2 no. The scientific basis for creationism is a nonsense compared with the evidence for evolution

[3. Do you believe that religious belief should be legally protected from ridicule?]

Q3 no

[4. Should an independent government adviser whose views in their area of expertise conflict with government policy be able to express those views publicly?]

Q4 Is that not a contradiction? How can you be independant if you cannot voice your views openly? The government does have the right to ignore advise and may be in receipt of conflicting advise.

[5. Should religious courts such as Sharia and Beth Din be recognised as alternative systems within UK law?]

Q5 we should have one law system only

[6. Do you agree that testing on animals (within strict criteria) is a necessary part of the development of medicines?]

Q6 yes

[7. Should policy-makers trust scientific evidence even when it appears counter-intuitive?]

Q7yes scientific evidence should always be given consideration in a policy decisions

[8. Do you think that abortion time limits should always be determined by the current scientific and medical consensus?]

Q8I believe the current abortion time limit is too long and should be reduced to twenty weeks. I would support a womens right to choose up to this time limit.

[9. Should religious leaders be entitled to vote in the House of Lords?]

Q9 if elected and chosen through a properly democratic system. I want a democratically chosen upper house.

[10. Do you support the reform of English and Welsh libel law to allow a stronger 'public interest' defence?]

Q10 I believe the libel laws need reformed to allow free and frank scientific debate.
